Aftermath
Mausoleum Records 2002
Did Jon Torres ever do anything that wasn’t good? As far as I know, NO! I think that you all know him as a musician participating in such bands as Lääz Rockit, Angel witch, Exodus, I4NI, The Lord Weird Slough Feg, and lately we’ve seen two outings from his 80s bands: Warning (now under name Warning SF) and Ulysses Siren.
“Aftermath” is the definite top of all power metal outings that came out last year. And by power metal I don’t mean the usual keyboard driven music, though there are some good ones among them too. I mean powerful guitars, kick-ass drumming, great strong vocals (not the screaming castrato shit all the time) and good songs, of course. Almost thrash metal, but not quite – that’s my definition of power metal. You’ll find it all on this album. All of the songs featured are from the 80s. First 7 have been rerecorded and as an addition we have 3 original tracks from the demo “Not A Chance In Hell”. I was expecting the intro to develop into a good song, but it certainly served its purpose introducing us to “Road Death”, one of the most compelling songs I’ve heard in ages. To prove that they can bring some versatility into their work, Jon and gang featured some songs that could easily fit on some doom band’s repertoire, like “Aftermath” (at least the beginning), or “Happy Doomsday”. But, nothing beats the fierce energy of “Thunderhead”. It is where the entire band shines in all its light: singer Torre Carstensen just rips everything apart, Aaron Jellum (Lääz Rockit, the solos on the entire album) makes one of the best appearances since the great Rockit days, as does Will Caroll, former Lääz Rockit thunder man, and original members Jon Torres and Brian Poole. They do nothing but verifying this song’s entrance to my hall of all-time favorites.
I guess you can all see from everything I wrote here that this is one hell of an album that deserves every true metalhead’s attention. This is definite ‘buy of die’ stuff!!!
